Miriam Joy has been an accomplished gourd artist and teacher for many years. Miriam grew up on the Navajo reservation where her parents taught at the Indian schools. She left the reservation after high school graduation and pursued an art career. She has taught most recently at the Wuertz Gourd Festival 2010 along with other festivals that include Washington State gourd festival, Ohio Gourd festival and at Gourdstock in San Diego, along with doing workshops for gourd clubs around the U.S.A. She again returns to the Wuertz Festival in Arizona for 2011 having all of her classes being filled by the second day of website listing on the Wuertz Farms festival page, she is blessed to have other gourd artists who wish to learn her wax technique for decorating gourds.

We had 12 members sign up to take the class with Miriam on Saturday April 16th 2011. The class started with Miriam giving us a demonstration of the technique. Miriam is a wonderful teacher and we were very happy she had time to fit us into her very busy schedule. We highly recommend taking one of her classes if you have the opportunity. The Michigourders Gourd Guild would like to thank Miriam and Bud for coming to Michigan, also Gary and Ingrid for letting the Guild once again use their home for the class. Below is a gallery of photos taken at the class.
