I was in Romeo going to a Cider Mill in the fall about 8 years ago and we happen to stop at a farm that had a stand out front. Walking around I came across a Martin gourd which I usually call a pear gourd. I was amazed that it dried to a wood type finish. I just had to buy it! When showing it to my sister-in-law we decided we could make birdhouses out of them and start to do some craft shows. We found out about the Ohio gourd show and ended up taking a weekend to go down. After going thru the show and seeing what everyone was doing with them we came home with a van full of gourds. We were totally hooked. We had started doing craft shows and actually everyone loved them, saying that this was such a unique item. I am no artist, but try my best at creating something someone would love. It seems like when I'm painting it relaxes me. From then on I can't go to a gourd show without buying gourds to paint. Actually, it was about 5 years ago I ran into Chris at a Royal Oak Craft show and was talking with her and told her I did birdhouses and from then on I have run into her at Ohio and Indiana Gourd shows. A few years ago she told me about the Michigan Gourd Society but never found the time to join. But now that I've joined the Michigourders I am looking forward to learning a lot more.
